When we first researched goji, we found out that most brands were 30 - 40% goji or less. The remaining formula were other fruit juices or water. It seems odd that what is being marketed as goji juice is actually less than 50% goji.
Why are companies labeling their product goji juice when the majority
of the formula is not goji? The main reason is probably cost.
You can buy a quart of pure grape or blueberry juice from the store for less
than $8 or, even cheaper, a gallon of apple juice for less than $5. Goji juice is very expensive compared to most fruit juices because it
has to be shipped from the far east.
If a company doesn't not list the percentage of goji juice in their formula,
be very careful. We've heard of percentages of 50%, 30%, even as low as
10%. If the percentage is not listed but the amount of goji (in pounds)
per bottle or the amount of goji (in mg) per oz is listed, then you can do the
math to calculate the percentages.
Our formula is 100% goji juice. We use 40,000 mg of goji berries per one ounce serving. 40,000 mg per ounce equals 1.28 kg per 32oz (1 quart) bottle or approximately 2.81 pounds of goji berries per bottle. Based on our 100% goji juice, you can calculate the percentages of other goji drinks on the market. For example, if a goji drink has 30,000 mg of goji berries per oz, that calculates to a 75% goji juice formula. 8,000mg of goji berries per oz calculates to a 20% goji juice formula. 2.2 lbs of goji berries per 32oz bottle calculates to a 78% goji juice formula.
When comparing different brands of goji juice, read the label on the bottle carefully. Information on a website sometimes is not entirely accurate because independent distributors and resellers of the product wrote the information on the website. They might have been misinformed on the facts or made it up false information to sell more product. What is listed on the label of the bottle is written by the manufacturer of the product so in most cases it is accurate because it is scrutinized by the federal authorities more closely.
